I've now made two trips to Oregon from my home in Fort Wayne, IN. And I must say, I've captured some memories that will be with me for a lifetime. Please take my advice: plan a golf trip to Oregon! Go with your buddies; go with your significant other; go alone!! Just get there!!! You will never forget it. Why? Because there are ten courses within the "Oregon Triangle" that are must plays. Nine of these courses are currently on the major Top 100 Lists and one was rated in the recent past. You can easily play each of these ten courses in a week and stay at several of the finest golf resorts in the country. | |
Take a look at a map of Oregon. Locate the cities of Portland, Bandon, and Bend. You will see that each is a vertex of an (almost) equilateral triangle. Inside this triangle you will discover places with scenery you will remember for a lifetime. I flew into Portland for my first dose of Oregon golf in 2004. This past summer, Oregon was a stop on a drive from the Midwest.

This is Part 5 of my series covering the 2013 Summer Trip. It was a perfectly clear 47 degrees when I left the hotel at 7:30 Thursday morning. Bill Blumenhurst, the Head Professional of my home course in Fort Wayne, had suggested I play the Eugene Country Club, site of niece Amanda Blumenhurst’s 2008 U.S. Amateur championship. He was struck by the majesty of the large trees when he was there. It is a private course and is one of the best in the country, rated 85th on Golf Digest’s current “America’s Top 100 Golf Courses” list (public and private). I had arranged with Bill Morach, Eugene CC’s Head Professional, to play the course as an unaccompanied guest. I was paired with Scot Alexander, a PGA Professional from Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles who was visiting his in-laws in Eugene. We teed off at 8:44 and completed the round in a crisp 3 hours. Interestingly, Eugene CC has a strictly enforced time limit of four hours. I had one of my better rounds on the trip and as I expected, Scot was close to par. At the end of the round, Scot invited me to play Hillcrest CC as his guest. Hillcrest is one of the top private clubs in Los Angeles. Former members include George Burns, Frank Sinatra, Al Jolson, Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Walter O’Malley, and Groucho Marx. This is the course where Groucho famously pronounced “I don’t want to be a member of any club willing to have me as a member.” He joined anyway. I just might take Scot up on his invitation! The course has about 1500 trees which include over 100 species. There are some Douglas Firs that have grown to a height of more than 200 feet!
![]() When you take a golf trip that encompasses 21 golf courses (17 of them in Top 100 lists) in seven states, travel over 6300 miles, and complete the entire trip in two calendar weeks, it is tough to summarize in a blog post. So I will break my summary up into several posts. Even by my standards, this trip was ambitious. I would be playing the following courses that are now or once were on a Top 100 list: |
