I'll be playing 11 courses in Illinois, 12 courses in Missouri, 1 course in Kansas, 5 courses in Oklahoma, 1 course in Texas, 3 courses in New Mexico, 1 course in Arizona, and 9 courses in California.
That's 43 courses in 19 days. "What?!" you say. Well, 12 of the 43 are nine holes courses so it's more like 37 eighteen hole courses in 19 days. Easy, right?
This has been quite a trip to plan. Just on the way out, I'll be staying at 18 different hotels/motels on Route 66 (including the famous El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, NM, the Wigwam Motel in San Bernadino, CA, the Saga Motor Hotel in Pasadena, CA, and the Carlin Villa Motel in Carlinville, IL) and eating at 40 or so iconic restaurants/pubs/stands/bars.
I have called and spoken with personnel from every golf course to assure I won't run into leagues, outings, and events and have had to tweak the schedule along the way to accommodate each instance.
Making matters even more complicated, 11 of the courses are private and require additional help and or approval to play. A special thanks to Bill Blumenhurst, the PGA Professional at my course, Coyote Creek Golf Club in Fort Wayne for the calls he made to secure a spot for me on many of the private courses.
A trip of this length poses additional challenges. I'll be doing laundry at least two evenings and I don't even want to think about what might happen if one of the days of the trip is washed out due to rain.
So that's it. Be sure to follow my progress as I will be blogging every evening, right at this site.
